UNC's James cleared to play after concussion

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

North Carolina coach Roy Williams says freshman Joel James has been cleared to return from a concussion that sidelined him for three straight games.

Williams says it's unclear whether 6-foot-10 center's conditioning is good enough to play Saturday against North Carolina State after the layoff.

James apparently took a blow to the head during a win against Wake Forest on Feb. 5 and began experiencing headaches afterward, but he didn't notify the team's medical staff and played in a lopsided loss at Miami that weekend. He didn't play in the loss at Duke nor in wins against Virginia and Georgia Tech in the past week.

Williams has since moved to a four-guard lineup and shortened his rotation.

James is averaging 2.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 11 minutes per game.
