Danville Police say man shot himself while cleaning a pistol

Danville Police say a man was cleaning a pistol when it accidentally discharged striking his hand Saturday morning.

Police say about 10:13 a.m. a caller advised a relative had accidentally shot himself and needed treatment at a home in the 1100 block of Franklin Turnpike.

Upon arrival Danville Police learned that the victim, a 28-year-old resident of the house, had left to seek treatment at Danville Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department. However, the man never arrived. Due to the circumstances Crime Scene and Investigations personnel responded to the scene.

At approximately 1:30 pm the victim was brought back home by a family member while Danville Police were still there.

Rather than go to the hospital, he had walked to a friend's house to seek treatment of a non-life threatening bullet wound to his hand. He reported to the Investigator that he had been cleaning a pistol when it accidentally discharged striking his hand.

The investigation is continuing.
