One of the last symbols of the early days of N.C. State University football is coming down in the name of progress.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Riddick Field house will be torn down early next month. Kevin MacNaughton, associate vice chancellor for facilities, said the demolition will help create a safer path for pedestrians between the north and central sections of campus.
A university study determined that the old field house creates a safety hazard by obscuring sight lines into the pedestrian tunnel leading under the railroad tracks to Reynolds Coliseum and other locations.
Some students have begun a social media drive to try and save the field house, which was built in 1936.
The football team moved off campus to Carter-Finley Stadium in 1966.
