Local students tackle tough issues at youth conference

ROANOKE, VA -

Student leaders in our area are making a difference by tackling some of the tough issues teens face.

Sitting in a classroom isn't as easy as it looks. For some students their focus is on surviving the battle once they get outside.

Seventh grader Olivia Assenat worries about what she'll face when she hits high school. She's joining 85 other students from across the area hoping to learn as much as she can from the Youth Alcohol Drug Abuse Prevention Project convention.

"I want to prepare for high school and if something bad is going on, I will know what to do and not get peer pressured into it," attending YADAPP conference Olivia Assenat says.

Junior Tammie Goode is a youth leader at this conference. She's helping younger students like Olivia make a transition she made not long ago.

"I hope I teach them, they can conquer their relationships and different peer pressure in their life," youth leader Tammie Goode says.

While another student leader, Ynise Barnes, says it wasn't long ago she was being bullied at school. This project helped her face those problems head on. Now she's paying it forward by hoping to drive this message home to the students at the conference.

"You as individual make your high school, what your high school is going to be. You can't let someone else shape it for you," YADAPP youth leader Ynise Barnes says.

Sharing that experience is exactly what Olivia and many of the other students say they took away from this day long conference.
