A Roanoke apartment complex security guard and car driver are recovering following a shooting this past weekend.
According to Roanoke City Police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson, the incident began a little before 12:28 a.m. on Saturday, February 23rd. Officers were called to the Ashton Heights apartment Complex.
Security guards at the complex say one of their group, 23-year-old Jerry David Overstreet Jr., of Lynchburg, spotted four men walking out of one building and getting into a car, with what looked like open containers of alcohol. Overstreet tried to stop the men, but police say the car drove at him and hit him. The impact sent Overstreet onto the hood of the car, then fall on the ground. The car drove off.
A second security guard arrived, and fired one shot at the car. A third security guard got into his vehicle, and chased after the car.
Police caught up with the third guard and the car at 12:39 p.m., at the intersection of Tellico Road and Lynn Avenue. The officers said they found the driver of the car, 21-year-old Joshua Tyree Poindexter, had been shot. None of the other men were in the car. Investigators also believe Poindexter's car hit another car, a tree, and a mailbox.
EMTs took Poindexter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.
As of Monday evening no charges had been filed. The case is still under investigation.
