The plea agreement means Jason Shell won't get out of the state penitentiary until he's somewhere in his mid 50s.

He's also facing a probation violation charge in Roanoke County, meaning he has ten years hanging over his head for that.

Shell is a convicted cocaine dealer with a violent record.

The victim in this case, Moneta store owner Bob Terry, said he was fine with the plea deal.

"The main thing is getting [Shell] off the streets so he won't bother anybody else," Terry said Tuesday morning from his store.

He did not attend the hearing.

Original post:

Jason Shell will spend 18 years in prison for the beating and robbery of Moneta store owner, Bob Terry, back in October of 2011. Prosecutors say the crimes were motivated by heroin.

WSLS 10's Scott Leamon will have more on this, and why prosecutors believe heroin use might be reaching epidemic levels in the Bedford area starting with WSLS 10 at 5.
