Roanoke to lose three judges in state budget

ROANOKE -

The latest state budget could be bad news for the Roanoke City court system.

The General Assembly's budget includes no money for three judge vacancies in Roanoke City, two circuit court spots and one spot for juvenile and domestic relations.

On February 12 the Roanoke Bar Association nominated three attorneys for the open positions.

The nominations came with the assumption that the General Assembly would fund the positions.

A budget amendment from Governor Bob McDonnell is the city's last hope for the money to fill the vacancies.

"That's very frustrating and it's going to end up hurting clients and hurting people seeking judicial relief," said Scott Sexton, an attorney with the firm Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore in Roanoke. "We are optimistic and hopeful that the governor will take some action."

A spokesperson for Governor McDonnell said it will be a couple of weeks before any decisions are made on budget amendments.
