There is no question that food boxes and containers are busy to look at and just because it highlights healthy ingredient doesn't mean all of them are.
Dr. Glenn Kent, Jefferson College of Health Sciences Food Psychologist explains, "One of my pet peeves about labeling it that they put all kinds of things on the front of these packages to make us think that it is healthy. I tell people to go straight to the back and look at the ingredients, so you know what is in the food you are eating. If you can't pronounce half of it then it is a good idea to put it down because it means it is highly processed."
Dr. Kent's research hopes to come up with a counting scale that makes label reading easier. He will spend the summer analyzing information about study participants and the foods they eat over a three day period. He hopes to have results by this fall.
He says, "It kind of blows your mind away when you hear a number. The idea of quantifying it may be helpful for some people in choosing healthier foods."
