Carroll County students get free tickets, rides to quarterfinal basketball game

CARROLL COUNTY -

Whether it is line dancing, or sporting a toga, the students at Carroll County High School know how to support their boys basketball team.

"We usually have posters with faces and we usually have a theme," said Kalley Kirkland, a student.

An anonymous phone call to principal Chuck Thompson earlier this week helped make sure this year's tradition would continue over the weekend at the state quarterfinal in Salem. A fan paid for the fuel and tickets to send at least one bus load of students to the game and the community is working together to get a second.

"It kind of took me off my feet a little bit because we know the community has been very supportive of our basketball team this season, but to take it to that level is very special," said Thompson.

"Most kids don't have that kind of time and that kind of money to come down and help us out," said Austin Horton, a Cavalier basketball player.

The gym has been packed throughout the year, sometimes standing room only. The coach calls it the teams sixth man

"I really believe that, especially at our home games," said Brad Hawks, Head Coach.

This weekend, shooting guard Ryan Gravely hopes an act of kindness in the community will help make a difference on the court away from home.

"We got a good opportunity in front of us. I think if we play good and we're able to win and make it to Richmond, that's our next goal. But we're just trying to take it one game at a time," said Gravely.

They will be on their biggest stage since the early nineties, now with a section full of students set to cheer them on.
