Read Across America Day encouraging students to pick up a book

ROANOKE COUNTY -

On Friday students throughout the country will take part in the biggest reading day of the year.

Read Across America Day focuses on getting students to enjoy picking up books beyond just the classroom.

Hundreds of volunteers will go into schools throughout Southwest and Central Virginia to participate in the annual event, including our very own Storm Team 10 meteorologists Patrick McKee and Jeff Haniewich.

At Green Valley Elementary School in Roanoke County kids are dressing up as there favorite Dr. Seuss characters to celebrate the big day.

"I think bringing people out from the community and into the school shows kids that reading is a cool thing to do," said Green Valley Elementary Assistant Principal Ashley Williams. "(The students) view reading as a positive thing and not taking a test. They view reading as something fun to do."

Read Across America Day is held every year in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday which is March 2.
