Butterfly Exhibit moves in to Science Museum of Western Virginia

ROANOKE, VA -

These workers aren't just building an exhibit. They're building a home to 400 to 600 butterflies.

"We will be ordering them from suppliers of butterflies from around the world," Science Museum of Western Virginia Lead Animal Care Specialist, Derek Kellogg says.

Derek Kellogg say the butterflies are coming in from Costa Rica, the Philippines, and Africa.

"It's going to be a whole new cast of butterflies every time you come and visit," Kellogg says.

Crews brought hundred of plants from 30 different kinds to the exhibit on the 5th floor of the Center in the Square. Keeping up the exhibit though, isn't cheap.

The museum will spend about $1,000 each week brining in 100 to 200 different species of butterflies. This is something Kellogg thinks will be well worth it when it comes to attracting more people the museum.

"It will be something that people will end up being excited about visiting and I hope it gives them an appreciation for beauty that exists in nature," Kellogg says.

There's also strict USDA regulations. The garden has to be kept at 85 degrees during the day and 75 at night. There's also air-locked containment entrances and exits to make sure none of the butterflies get out.

Butterflies won't be the only thing hanging out at the exhibit.

The museum got a special permit for events. So, you can even walk down the aisle and get married. Plus, visitors can go on top of the roof and look down at the skyline to see the butterflies. It will costs members $2 and non-members $4. The museum opens May 18th.
