What's in a name? More than you might think says one local school, which officially changed its name Monday.
National College in Salem will now be known as American National University. The school says as it's grown and started offering more programs, it felt the time was right to make the jump from college to university.
They say "American" was added to the name to help the school stand out, particularly to international students, who make up a growing part of their enrollment.
"That's not an end to it though," said Chuck Steenburgh, spokesperson for American National University. "We'll continue to offer additional programs, particularly at the graduate level, but also online, English as a Second Language, and a new corporate training division."
The name change only applies to the Salem campus and the school's Higher Education Center in Northern Virginia. The remaining 29 campuses will continue to go by the name National College.
