Roanoke City floats idea to put trash compactor downtown

Roanoke City staff is floating the idea to put a trash compactor downtown, near the Market Building and the soon-to-be Market Square.

Roanoke City solid waste manager Skip Decker said it would eliminate unsightly garbage collection containers in the city's "core", or the downtown market area.

The proposal is to allow downtown market area businesses and restaurants to try the idea out from July 1st through the end of the year.

Garbage collection would then stop on January 1, 2014, Decker confirmed.

Downtown market businesses and restaurants would pay the same fee they're paying now to use the compactor, only they could use it 24 hours per day.

City collection doesn't start right now until 3 p.m. on most days of the week.

Decker said there would also be incentive to recycle, saying businesses that recycled could slash their fees, which are right now $70 per month for small businesses and $120 per month for restaurants.

Decker said city council members seemed warm to the idea at a briefing this morning.

City council will vote to enact the plan at its next meeting on March 14th.
