Technology makes managing diabetes easier

BOTETOURT COUNTY -

Brody Harris was diagnosed with diabetes almost three years ago.

He explains, "You have to check your sugar at least 4 to five times a day."

His mom, Elisa Harris explains how they found out.

She says, "He lost twenty six pounds and we thought because he was playing hockey and baseball he was just being active. It was from the diabetes."

With the help of this IGBStar attachment for his smart phone monitoring his sugar is easier than it used to be.

In the past, patients have had to write down on a piece of paper all of their sugar readings which can be 5 to 10 a day. They would then have to keep up with that log and take it to the next appointment.

Now smart phones and the devices that work with them are making that so much easier for patients.

Brody says ,"Then you can e-mail your results to your endocrinologist."

Carilion Clinic Pediatric Endocrinologist, Dr. Erica Reynolds explains, "That makes the record keeping a lot easier diabetes is already a big hassle."

Elisa says with time diabetes gets easier to deal with. She explains, "It is very scary at first but it is controllable. It is just a way of life. It just becomes part of your life it is not as daunting as you go along as it is in the beginning."
