Pack band member hikes heckling to new high

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Catherine Ernst stands out in the N.C. State pep band, and we're not talking about her musical abilities.

Ernest is a heckler, and is egged on by her fellow band members.

"Everyone kept encouraging me to do it and I got louder and louder and then it became something that everyone relies on me to do now," she said.

At times, Ernst said, she has impacted the game.

At a Wolfpack women's basketball game, Ernest said, "I yelled at the girl from the other end of the court and she turned around and looked at me."

To be fair, she doesn't heckle the entire game. Most of the time, she yells encouraging words for the Wolfpack.  But she is loud and she is relentless.

"Sometimes I feel a little light-headed, but I'm able to manage it," she said. "I'm smart about it. But if there are two games back-to-back, my voice is rough by the end of it."

Ernst is a senior, so she'll leave a void when the Pack plays next year.

"I'll be yelling at the TV and probably not here," she said. "I won't yell because the people around don't appreciate it, but probably for all the games at Reynolds I'll come back and try to sit on the front row so I can yell."

Roanoke City Councilman Sherman Lea says proposing a pay raise for council members and the mayor is an awkward situation for them. The proposal currently on the table would increase council's salary by 28 percent. However council members are the only ones that can propose a pay raise; a request that hasn't been made in 10 years says Lea.
