Southside Delegate Don Merricks not running for re-election

Posted: Updated:
PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA -

Part of Southside will need to elect a new Delegate to represent them in Richmond this coming November.

16th District Delegate Don Merricks (R-Pittsylvania Co.) said in an e-mail Wednesday, that he will not run for re-election this coming November.

Del. Merricks wrote that he wants to focus more on his business in Danville, as he nears retirement.

Full statement from Del. Don Merricks below:

For the past six years it has been my honor and privilege to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates. During this time, I have done my best to represent the people of the 16th district as fairly and honestly as I am able. My responsibilities have extended to representing Southside Virginia values in Richmond, pursuing economic recovery, securing workforce training, encouraging job growth and standing firmly for a safe and healthy environment for all residents.

After much consideration, I have decided not to run for a fourth term in the Virginia House of Delegates in order to focus my time and energy on my business in Danville.

As with many small business owners, the past several years have been difficult and I have had many hard decisions to make. And now I must make my most difficult decision yet. By not returning to Richmond, I will be able to be in my office daily working alongside my wife and my employees to ensure that our business is strong and we are finding new opportunities for growth.

The future success of our region is dependent not only upon attracting new business to the area but in supporting the businesses owned by the families and residents of the 16th district. It is my responsibility to my company to now fully focus on our future.

It has been my honor to be your public servant and I pray that the decisions I have made, the bills I have sponsored and the votes I have cast will continue to make a positive impact on the region.
