Northside Middle students pay to dress up for Relay For Life

ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

Northside Middle School Students will put on their best Steve Urkel impersonation today as they pay to dress up as nerds when they head to school this morning. They call it "Fundraiser Friday."

Last week, students dressed in Disney theme gear. They have a new theme each week. Students say it's a fun way to raise money for Relay For Life. They make a $2 donation to the American Cancer Society to take part in the weekly theme days.

This is the first year schools have been involved in Relay For Life and they are already making a difference. So far, 26 teams have signed up, there are about 130 participants and they've raised nearly $7,500. "It's a good turnout and a lot of money getting donated to it," said Northside student Skylour Scultz. "To all of use it's very important because we're starting a trend for all the students like coming up, to do it."

The schools involved in planning the event are Salem High School, Glenvar, Cave Spring, Hidden Valley and Northside Middle and High Schools and North Cross. The relay, taking place March 16 at the Cave Spring Middle School track, is open to the community.
