Virginia Tech is fronting an application to the Federal Aviation Administration for an unmanned drone research site, according to the Virginia Technology Alliance for Public Safety.
The coalition is backing drone research for application in law enforcement.
The Virginia Sheriff's Association has endorsed the plan.
Right now, unmanned drones are grounded in Virginia due to a two-year moratorium, with some exceptions for search and research operations, according to the VATAPS.
The coalition wants to change that.
Officials said, if the FAA selects Tech, the test site will probably be at an island owned by the federal government off the Virginia coast.
The island has restricted air space.
The Virginia Technology Alliance for Public Safety is asking the Governor to veto the moratorium at the "veto session" at the state capital in Richmond in a few weeks.
