A sophomore delegate in our area is making waves in Richmond.
Delegate Joseph Yost was named the 2013 Legislative Champion of the Year by the Virginia Education Association.
He was recognized for his sponsorship of HB 1356.
That would have allowed employees of local governments and school divisions to voluntarily join the state employee health plan.
The bill did not pass, but his efforts have allowed for a study on the issue.
"For me, education is an important part of who I am as a person, but it's also an important part of my district. We have a very large active public school system in my district and I've got two universities that have very large departments of education that train a lot of teachers," said Yost.
Yost will formally accept the award in Hampton, Virginia on April 12th.
