Lifesaving technology now available as medical app

New lifesaving technology is taking a famous measuring system and making it available on-the-go.

When it comes to our children during emergency situations, we can never be too careful.

Dr. James Broselow, the man some call a 'legend in medicine,',toured the LewisGale Medical Center in Salem. Dr. Broselow invented the 'Broselow Tape,' a length-based weight chart to give accurate doses in medication for children and infants. He learned how the new technology version, called e-Broselow Artemis Solution, has become invaluable for doctors and nurses at LewisGale.

"Our goal is to use technology and standardization to actually eliminate mathematics from the process," Dr. James Broselow, inventor of Broselow Tape says. "We couldn't do that 10 years ago. The technology wasn't there, but it is there now."

Dr. Broselow is working with a Blacksburg enterpenuer, Peter Lzar, to bring the e-Broselow App to life.

It gives anyone instant access to the right dose of medicine to give a child. You can even use a new bar code app launched on Friday to take a picture of a medications bar-code, and see the possible side effects.

"You get in a group of people and you hear about dosing errors." e-Broselow CEO, Peter Lazar says. "It's comforting to know my daughters, if we had an accurate emergency, they have the tools needed to prevent those errors."

The technology takes the guess work out of deciding how much medicine to give a child during a crisis.

"It really made a difference because it allowed us to stop, think right away, look at a reference and be able to treat this children as fast as we could," Dr. Timothy Coakley, LewisGale Regional Medical Director.
