DURHAM, N.C. -

UNC freshman Aaron Hanner has sparked a Carolina blue fire storm after admitting to being a life long Duke fan.

Hanner wrote a guest column in The Chronicle, the Duke student paper, detailing his love for the Blue Devils. And his hatred of the Tar Heels.

"Seeing those powder-blue argyle-wearing ninnies take the court makes my blood boil," wrote Hanner.

In the column, Hanner says his mother was a manager for the basketball team in the early 1980s before she graduated in 1986. "We lived and breathed basketball from the first day of the season to the last," Hanner wrote.

Hanner said that Duke did not have the major he wished to pursue, leading him to the school eight miles down the road. But attending UNC and being a member of the band has not lightened Hanner's shade of blue.

"I have never felt a more vindictive joy in my life than standing in a crowd of Carolina fans watching the beating Duke gave their team back in February," Hanner wrote.

Harsh words coming from a Carolina student but Hanner admits he gets a "a steady stream of grief" from his friends about his allegiance.

WNCN reached out to Hanner but he declined to speak on camera.

"I offer my sincere apologies to the UNC community," he wrote in an email. "This letter was intended for the Duke student body and while I knew it would be seen by others, I did not intend to directly target or antagonize UNC or the band program. I failed to anticipate the magnitude of the potential repercussions of my actions, which were off the cuff.

"I was born a Blue Devil and I'll be a Blue Devil to the last, "Tar Heel dead" be damned"

The online backlash has been quick and just as harsh as Hanner's words for the Heels.

"You are an absolute joke," wrote user GoHeels in the comments section of the article on The Chronicle's website.

Other comments for Hanner include:

"You're pretty much a disgrace to the University."

"Gosh you are awful."

"Majoring in irony and stupidity."
