The Altavista boys and girls nearly pulled off the elusive "double" of a boys and girls state title in the same season. The Colonels manhandled West Point with a squad that is laden with underclassmen. Juan Thornhill had 21 points while handling the ball, Darius Johnson had 21 points and 15 rebounds inside and twin brother Demetrius Johnson added 13 points--and they are all sophomores. In fact only 3 of the 15 deep roster are seniors. Coach Mike Cartolaro looks to be loaded for the future.
Meanwhile, the Altavista girls did all they could to upset the defending Division I champion East Rockingham Eagles. East Rockingham finishes 29-1 in winning back to back titles. Sydney Morris had 9 point and 17 rebounds for the Lady Colonels, who take home state silver.
