Salem High students travel to state basketball title bout

SALEM -

More than one hundred Salem High School students filed onto a pair of charter buses this afternoon.Their destination is the state basketball finals in Richmond.

"It's going to be a great environment. I am psyched about the game. it's going to be a great atmosphere," said Mackenzie Edwards.

Both the boys and girls basketball teams will play Saturday night for the right to be called state champs. Thanks to the Salem Sports Foundation, these students and chaperones will be there every step of the way.

"This is probably a once in a lifetime kind of thing so it's a pretty big day for Salem High School," said Tina Bateman.

"I'm probably taking a nap to prepare myself mentally to be able to cheer," said Stephanie Hickman.

The buses are scheduled to arrive back at the high school between three and four o'clock in the morning. Students hope they are celebrating a pair of state titles along the way.

This after screaming for the Spartans for close to four hours, while decked out in school colors.

"This is really exciting you know I'm glad I go to Salem High School to be able to experience this," said Edwards.

"Lots of kids, several adults, we're just going to have a great time," said Bateman.

Win or lose, it is likely a day these students and fans will be able to look back on for many years to come.
