----------

Crews are working to clean up a tractor trailer fire that has multiple lanes of Route 220 closed.

It happened at around 2:30am Monday just north of Boones Mill.

Franklin County Fire Marshal Bennie Russell says a tractor trailer hauling plastic was driving in the northbound left lane and hit the concrete jersey wall in the middle of the highway. He says that ruptured a fuel tank which he believes sparked the fire.

One person, the driver, was inside the truck at the time. He made it out safely and was not injured.

Crews from the Boones Mill Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. The cab is a total loss but the trailer was saved.

Russell says he believes any leaks or spills will be minor, but for precautionary reasons crews may return to the scene later Monday to ensure there are no environmental impacts.

The northbound and southbound left lanes of 220 are closed. Traffic is still moving through the area using the right lanes.

Officials say they hope to have 220 fully open by 6:00am.
