NRV basketball teams celebrate state titles

NEW RIVER VALLEY -

Floyd County's Lady Buffaloes arrived in style just after midnight Sunday morning carrying with them a state championship trophy.

"That was honestly one of the most amazing moments of my life. It felt amazing just to have everybody there," said Haley Bolt, a member of the Lady Buffaloes.

Only about thirty miles northwest at the same time, the Radford High School boys team was welcomed to a crown along Main Street and back at their gymnasium.

"There were just a ton of people there at a late hour of the night and it was just awesome. it speaks volumes about the community," said Josh Little, a member of the Bobcats.

"Just the experience of going to Richmond and working our way up, it's just phenomenal and something I'll never forget," said Drew Cox, a member of the Bobcats.

Both schools have quite a history at taking home the hardware. The Lady Buffaloes won it all most recently back in 2008, and the Radford High School boys took home this trophy just two years ago in 2011.

They are a pair of communities with strong support from locals like Michelle Mullins in Radford, and Bobby Vest in Floyd.

"It's a small community here in town and our children all went to the high school. Our children have all graduated but we still follow them," said Mullins.

"All of us kind of banded behind the girls and kind of made sure they did what they needed to do to bring a state championship home," said Vest.

They are a team that plans to celebrate their victory with a free trip to none other than FloydFest.
