Lyle Lovett will headline Band Together 2013

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Lyle Lovett will be this year's headline act for Band Together.

The announcement was made on live television Wednesday morning on WNCN, which is a proud media partner of Band Together in its mission to use live music as a platform for social change.  Tickets will go on sale Friday morning at 10 a.m., and fans can check Band Together NC's web site for information.

Lovett is well-known to music fans as a singer, composer and actor with a broad career that spans 14 albums. The Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner.

This year, event proceeds will benefit Tammy Lynn Center in Raleigh.  The Tammy Lynn Center helps children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Last year, Band Together raised $566,000 for Urban Ministries of Wake County. The effort, founded to spark charitable work after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, plans to raise even more this year.

The event's opening act will be Mac and Juice, who recently won Band Together's "Last Band Standing" at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh.

WNCN's Penn Holderness and Page Crawford will be on stage hosting the event.

Lovett has appeared in 13 feature films, and on stage and television.  Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association's inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was recently named the Texas State Musician.

Lovett has been touring in support of Release Me since its release in February. The album was No. 1 for several weeks on the Americana charts. Release Me is quintessential Lyle, mixing a smart collection of originals and songs written by some of his favorite songwriters that show not only the breadth of this Texas legend's deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences.

"We're over the moon," said Matt Strickland, Executive Director. "We're so excited; he's such a great musician.

The partnership with Band Together is part of a greater community outreach initiative called "WNCN At Your Service."  The station's goal is to use its broadcasting capabilities to improve the communities it serves.

WNCN will help viewers protect themselves against identity theft by hosting a free Shred-It event on March 23 in Cary (Leith Nissan at 2000 Auto Park Blvd.) and Fayetteville (Leith Automall at 2012 Skibo Road). Both will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WNCN is also the media partner for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's upcoming PurpleStride Raleigh-Durham 2013.
