For more facts about a recent FDA warning regarding Z-Pack antibiotic treatments and heart conditions we checked in with Doctor Carl Musser who is an Electrophysiologist with Carilion Clinic Cardiology. @

Dr. Musser explains, "The FDA warning discusses the small increase of developing potentially fatal heart rhythms in patients prescribed azithromycin with certain pre-existing conditions. Such pre-existing conditions include low blood potassium or magnesium levels, slow heart rates, known QT prolongation on an electrocardiogram or certain medications used to treat abnormal heart rhythms such as sotalol, dofetilide, amiodarone or dronedarone. Patient's are typically prescribed azithromycin (also called Z-Pak) for brief duration, usually 5 days. Patient's currently prescribed azithromycin with any of these pre-existing conditions should contact their primary care physician to discuss alternatives to azithromycin therapy."
