Roanoke College celebrating Pi Day

SALEM, VA -

Not only is Thursday a good day to eat pie, it's a great day to talk about Pi.  March 14 -- or 3.14 -- is Pi Day, and one local college is throwing a big celebration in hopes of getting people excited about math.

For the fifth straight year, the Mathematical Association of America chapter at Roanoke College has put together an all day Pi Day event.

From 8:30am - 4:30pm, students can stop by 271 Trexler Hall for the Pi-athlon, where they work in teams to answer math problems and other pi-related trivia for prizes.

Then at 7:00pm, Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. David Taylor will be giving a special presentation on the magic of math at Massengill Auditorium.

But the premiere event of the day will take place from 5:00pm - 6:00pm on the Back Quad, where students and members of the public have the opportunity to pie the faces of several math professors.  It costs $2 for one pie or $5 for three pies.  All of the money will be donated to a local charity (last year, it went to the West End Center.)

Organizers say the goal is to show people how fun math can be.

"My favorite thing about Pi Day I think is just raising mathematical awareness," said Taylor.  "We're here in 2013 and sometimes math scores are not the highest things we see these days.  And I think as a country and state and area we'd like to try encourage more math.  And Pi is a good way to do that."
