March 31 deadline to pay property taxes in Manatee County

Posted: Updated:
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Manatee County officials reminded Thursday that March 31 is the final deadline to pay property taxes in the county before interest, advertising charges and late fees are assessed.

This day falls on a Sunday, residents can make payments in person at the county tax collector's offices until 5 p. m. or pay online at taxcollector.com until 11:59 p.m. April 1. Mailed payments should be postmarked by March 31.

Tax collector Ken Burton Jr. said the quickest and easiest way is to pay online with a card or e-check or mail in the payments.

"There also are two things taxpayers should not do – do not wait until the end of March to pay taxes in person and do not write a bad check," he said adding that with heavy customer traffic in the office, the amount of payments a customer may make at one time can be limited.

County officials noted that under Florida law, when taxes become delinquent, postmarks are not honored and partial payment of delinquent taxes is not allowed.

There is no fee for paying property taxes online.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
