ACC live blog: Maryland beats Wake, 75-62

WNCN's Dane Huffman is writing live on all the games at the ACC Tournament. Here is the live blog from Thursday's game between Wake Forest and Maryland.

9:15 p.m., Terps win: Maryland lived to fight another day - this time, against Duke - in the ACC Tournament, while the Wake Forest tenure of Jeff Bzdelik appeared tenuous after Thursday's ACC first-round game. The Terps won this one, 75-62.

The Deacons led early in this one and had a second-half lead before Maryland surged ahead  to take a commanding lead. Maryland is leaving the ACC for the Big Ten after next season. Maryland plays Duke in the quarterfinals Friday at 7 p.m.

8:55 p.m., Terps pull away: Maryland is pulling away a bit from Wake Forest right now. The Terps are up 64-57 and just playing with much more confidence.

8:40 p.m., tight game: Maryland and Wake Forest are locked in a tight game now halfway through the second half. Right now it's 54-52 Maryland, but this one has gone back and forth for a while. There is still 8:06 to play.

C.J. Harris has 17 points for Wake and is playing a fearless game. But Dez Wells of Maryland, who is from Raleigh, has responded with 19 points for Maryland.

7:58 p.m., big half for Deacs: Wake Forest had a strong first half as an underdog against Maryland. The Deacons looked quick and confident on defense and passed the ball well on offense, all leading to a 35-30 halftme lead.

C.J. Harris has 13 points for Wake. Not a bad first half for a program whose coach appears to have his job in jeopardy.

7:30 p.m., Deacons on a run: C.J. Harris just hit a beautiful three-pointer and the Deacon fans are fired up. Wake is now up 23-19 with 6:16 to play - hardly a scoring explosion but still an interesting game.

Remember, the winner of this game plays Duke, and you'd have to think the Blue Devils would be more interested in playing Wake than Maryland.

7:32 p.m.: Good game so far. There are two of the ACC's lesser teams, but there's been plenty of back and forth. Wake is playing well and looks confident. Right now it's 17-15 Maryland with 7:51 left in the first half.

By the way, the Wake pep band is going rendition of "Forget You."  Doubt anyone in the arena is missing the irony of this one.

7:00 p.m., silence: Well, one question is answered. Wake Forest fans haven't been happy with the performance of the team this year, which is 13-17 coming into the tournament. 

There is plenty of speculation about the job of coach Jeff Bdellium, and Wake fans made their feelings known at the outset of this game. The Wake fans cheered their team when it was introduced and the starters were called out, but were silent when Bdellium was introduced.

Maryland, by the way, wasn't particularly razzed by ACC fans despite the school announcing it will leave for the Big Ten after next year. You wouldn't think coming to this tournament would be a big priority for Twerps fans – their team is only 8-10 in ACC play – but there's a good representation from the school here.

Of course, once the game started everything changed.

As the Maryland pep band cheered on its team, one fan yelled, "Why don't you go to Ohio – where Maryland is?"
