Roanoke music festival helping make college more affordable

SALEM -

Making college more affordable is the white whale for many educators.

Now students in the Roanoke Valley are helping reach that goal.

The Salem High School Band will join bands from William Fleming, Patrick Henry, and Franklin County high schools on stage at the Roanoke Civic Center Saturday for the Trane Music Festival.

The event is being used as a fundraiser for the Community College Access Program (CCAP) which offers discounted or free tuition to graduating seniors in need who are enrolling at Virginia Western.

"I've talked to the kids and many of them will take advantage of the CCAP program," said Salem Band Director Chris Wilkes. "It's a direct benefit for those kids and we're really happy to participate."

"It's really neat to be able to play with a lot of bands around the area and sort of get together and be part of a community together," said Salem senior Kyle Studtmann.

The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will also join the students on stage.

The concert runs Saturday from 4:00-7:30 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Tickets are $10 at the box office.
