Mill Mountain Zoo aims to bring back tigers, add bears & macaques

Posted: Updated:

WSLS 10 has learned Mill Mountain Zoo is in the "silent phase" right now in a campaign to raise $3,000,000, which the zoo will use to attract a new "signature" exhibit that might include bringing back tigers, adding bears, and housing more macaques.

The $3 million would also help refurbish current exhibits and infrastructure, explained Ray-Eric Correia, the zoo's executive director.

The Horace Fralin Charitable Trust recently donated the zoo $25,000, and promised to add another $25,000 if the zoo can raise $50,000.

Correia said that drive to $50,000 started Saturday.

Correia said the zoo is also producing educational videos for local schools, which he said will make money for the zoo once they find businesses to sponsor the videos.

Correia explained it wouldn't cost the schools a penny, but could be a big money-maker for the zoo.

The videos are also in line with SOL requirements.
