Tudor: Tired legs hurt Pack as much as Miami's Scott

Posted: Updated:

It's logical to assume that if Virginia Tech's Erick Green and Virginia's Joe Harris can be stopped on successive days, Durand Scott shouldn't be a dagger of a problem.

Far from it, as things turned out for N.C. State on Saturday in the ACC Tournament semifinals at Greensboro.

Miami's senior wingman, who is far more feared for defense than shooting, scored 32 points as the Hurricanes eliminated the Wolfpack, 81-71, to reach Sunday's 1 p.m. championship.

But in reality, it was as much a case of State's weary legs as Scott's offensive brilliance.

Only two minutes into the game, it was clear that State had heavy legs -- a predicament that was complicated by two quick foul calls against C.J. Leslie, Richard Howell's thigh injury from Friday and the team's lack of frontcourt depth.

A third game in three days turned out to be more than Pack playmaker Lorenzo Brown could overcome. Brown, who missed three games in mid-season as a result of an ankle injury, was a step off the pace all game against exceptionally quick Miami guard Shane Larkin.

All in all, it was as as palatable a post-season loss as State coach Mark Gottfried could have requested.

On an afternoon when his team was tired, the opponent talented and deep and with the Pack getting few, if any, of the close officiating calls, no one quit and Scott Wood almost shot the team back into it.

State wanted an ACC championship but a loss on Saturday almost always is better than a loss on Sunday for NCAA-bound teams.

If the title wasn't in the cards, there's a lot to be said about getting the consolation of an extra day's rest for a tired, wounded team.
