Downtown Roanoke Inc. hosts first St. Patrick's Day Festival

ROANOKE, VA -

Bagpipes are a Saint Patrick's Day Parade pastime, and a part of what an estimated 22,000 came out to see and hear on the streets of Downtown Roanoke Saturday, as part of the annual St. Patrick's Day parade and festival.

"I come out to enjoy the parade and listen to the music and just see everybody, it's a wonderful day," said Sonny Altice.

"I just want to bring my boys to come and have a good time and see lots of people with bagpipes and people marching," said Steve Novak.

The big difference this year, Downtown Roanoke Inc. put on the day long event.  In year's past, it was hosted by EventZone.

But the most noticeable change according to people who came to watch, was all of the green lining the streets.  Some parade regulars said it looked like more people dressed up for the festivities than ever before.

"I think that more people are dressed in green. They're getting into the festivities. It's getting nice outside and it's time for us to show our Irish side," said Sissy Campbell.

"It makes such a great atmosphere for the day and for the weekend to see everyone out here in the green and it just makes everything feel like Saint Patrick's Day," said Novak.
