MARTINSVILLE, VA -

A team of high school students from the Piedmont Governors School for math, science, and technology in Martinsville are headed to a world competition.

"the STAGS" team competed in the Virginia Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, a two-day tournament, in Richmond this past Friday and Saturday.

The contest challenged teams to design and build remote controlled robots which could fling Frisbee-type discs through targets, according to Jim Babb of VirginiaFIRST.  Robots that could climb pyramids that were part of the tournament area earned extra points.

The Martinsville team joins teams from Midlothian High School and Franklin High School, as eligible to head to the world championships in St. Louis next month.
