GILES COUNTY, VA -

Virginia State Police are investigating what caused a crash that killed a Roanoke man in Giles County on Saturday, March 16th.

According to State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the crash took place around 4:16 p.m. on Route 42, less than a mile east of Route 703.

The investigating trooper found a 1990 Mazda 626 sedan was driving east on Route 42, when it ran off the right side of the road, and hit a tree.

The passenger in the car, 67-year-old William J. Baublitz, of Roanoke, died from the impact.  State Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt.

EMTs airlifted the driver, 40-year-old Anthony L. Garrett Jr., of Buchanan, to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.  State Police say Garrett also was not wearing a seatbelt.

The investigation is ongoing, and Geller said charges were pending as of Sunday.
