Montgomery Co middle students invited to eating disorders talk

BLACKSBURG, VA -

Middle and high school students in Montgomery County are being invited to a special discussion on eating disorders tonight at Virginia Tech.

Nutrition expert Jessica Setnick will be the guest speaker as part of the university's Eating Issues and Body Image Awareness Week. She will focus on helping students have a healthier perspective about how and when to fit food into their daily routine and avoid using food to satisfy emotional needs.

You may be surprised to hear organizers have opened this discussion up to middle school students but perhaps even more surprising, they say children even at the elementary level are negatively influenced by what they often see around them. "Eating disorders don't start in college, they start much earlier, in fact they start much earlier than middle school and high school," said Linda Davis, RD Schiffert Health Center. "They found that there are 5 and 6 year olds dieting and talking about their weight, looks, and appearance. In college of course situations become more stressful and college students when they are under stress they tend to develop eating issues or disorder eating."

The discussion will take place tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Burruss Hall. Resource booths will be set up outside the auditorium to give you more information on this issues discussed.
