ROANOKE -

The West End area of Roanoke City is expecting to get a boost from a major revitalization project.

Later this morning The West End Center, Freedom First Credit Union, and the city will break ground on a new project.

The first stage will be building a Freedom First branch.

That's expected to be followed down the road by a community room, a production kitchen, and a revamped farmers market.

"I think it's desperately needed in this neighborhood," said West End Center Executive Director Joy Parrish. "The people that live here don't have access to financial services."

"It's been a couple of years in the making and now to actually see it come together is very exciting," said Dave Prosser, Vice President with Freedom First Credit Union.

A federal grant is helping foot the bill for the revitalization project.

The groundbreaking is at 10 a.m. this morning on Patterson Road next to the West End Center.
