New reality show to feature Downtown Roanoke Bed & Breakfast

A Downtown Roanoke Bed & Breakfast will soon make its national television debut.  Later this spring, The Inn on Campbell will be featured in a new reality series on Retired Living TV.  And Friday night, they're asking members of the community to share the spotlight with them.

The Inn's owners, Keith and Cindy Hummer, received a call from the Bed & Breakfast Association of Virginia, saying a reality show production team had reached out to them and asked if there were any inns that would be interested in doing a new series they were working on.  The Hummers threw their name in the hat and ultimately made the cut.

The show is called "Second Act" and it tells the stories of people who are recently retired, but are now pursuing other lifelong dreams.  The show's host, Paul DiMeo (of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" fame) then comes in and works with them to help make the most of that dream.

Since they began dating, the Hummers had always talked about opening a Bed & Breakfast.  They eventually bit the bullet and opened in the Inn on Campbell in January of 2012.  They say they've been pleased with how it's done so far, particularly with out of town guests -- but they admit they could do a much better job attracting local visitors.

"I got a phone call from a lady in Amsterdam, [Netherlands], who said we've heard about your inn, we want to come stay," said Keith Hummer.  "And I thought okay, they know about us in Amsterdam, but they don't know us a block and a half away.  We have a problem."

In an effort to help them do better locally, the show connected them with a local PR firm, among other things.

They say filming the show was an experience they won't soon forget.

"When they were here -- they were wonderful people and they were a lot of fun -- but they were here from early in the morning until late at night," said Cindy Hummer.  "You're living with them."

And the camera crews will be moving back in for one more day.  Friday night, they'll be filming one final segment for the show during an open house the Inn is hosting from 5:00pm - 7:00pm.  The Hummers say they'd like to have a strong showing from the community for the shoot and invite everyone to come see the Inn.

The Inn on Campbell is located at 118 Campbell Ave (in between 1st and 2nd Streets).

"Second Act" premieres on RLTV in May.  The Hummers say the show's producers have not yet told them the exact date their episode will be airing.
