A Rocky Mount couple was on vacation in Pigeon Forge when a massive fire broke out at the Black Bear Ridge Resort.

Chris and Billie Jo Staples first noticed the fire about a football field away from where they were staying. It quickly spread to multiple cabins.

"It was terrifying," said Chris Staples. "We quickly started gathering our stuff and letting others know."

Staples said by the time they packed up their belongings to leave, the fire was approaching their cabin, and at least 10 cabins were already on fire.

"At one point we seemed trapped," said Staples. "We were able to take another route down the mountain. By the time we got away from the fire, it looked like the entire mountain was on fire, like a volcano."

Staples said thankfully there were 39 people staying in their cabin, all were able to escape without injury.
