Tampa Bay Lightning looking for a new head coach

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Sunday morning, vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman of Tampa Bay Lightning announced that the organization released Guy Boucher from his head coaching commitment, effective immediately.

"Guy has poured his heart and soul into the Lightning organization for these past three years and we appreciate all the work he has done," said Yzerman upon making the announcement. "But ultimately I am not satisfied with the direction we are heading and I believe making a change today is in the best interest of our franchise."

The Lightning currently hold the 14th place in the Eastern Conference, with a 13-17-1 record.  During Boucher's tenure, the Lightning had a 97-78-20 record while making the playoffs once and losing in the Conference Finals in his first season as head coach.

Just as fast as Boucher was out, the rumor mill started up.  Widely being discussed as a replacement to Boucher is Buffalo Sabres ex-Head Coach Lindy Ruff.   Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman hired Ruff as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada's 2010 Olympic Team.  For now, Assistants Martin Raymond and Dan Lacroix will share coaching responsibilities.

Boucher's dismissal came one day after Tampa Bay fell behind by four goals in the first period of a 5-3 loss at Ottawa.

The Lightning will likely miss the postseason again after reaching the conference finals during Boucher's first year. He was hired as the Lightning's seventh coach in June 2010. Boucher's hiring was Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman's first major move as general manager.
