Roanoke looks to experiment with parking meters downtown

Parking changes are underway in downtown Roanoke.

Last week the city announced it will be adjusting parking times on the edges of downtown, allowing for long term street parking.

Roanoke will also re-designate no parking zones and loading zones to make more spaces available.

City Manager Chris Morrill said parking garages will still be emphasized downtown and more parking changes could be down the road.

"First we're going to get the system improved and see what the impact of that is. Then we'll move towards some type of pilot program," Morrill said. "It's really in the core where we want that turnover around the Market Building. So we might experiment with meters there."

Morrill said those experiments with parking meters could begin in the next 9 to 12 months.
