Virginia Tech students get advice from Reddit co-founder

Posted: Updated:

Pens feverishly moving and pictures quickly being snapped, you can tell these young entrepreneurs didn't want to miss a second of advice.

"Kids ask me in class, how do you start something, I don't have any money?" Virginia Tech Entrepreneur Club's President, Drew Stegmaier, says. "Well, I don't either. You have to get creative and get students to see it's possible and real."

It's easy to understand why these students are excited when the keynote speaker at Virginia Tech's Entrepreneur Club's event from 'Silicon Valley to Blacksburg' was Alexis Ohanian. Ohanian is the co-founder of the social media site 'Reddit.'

"I get to speak to college students all over the world and it's been incredible privilege because it's such an awesome point in their lives where their room, their board, a lot of their basic needs are covered," Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian says. "So, they have an opportunity to tinker, to create, to make things."

The idea of the event was to show students and members of the community you don't have to be in Silicon Valley to create a successful business.

"I see these people my age doing it and I want to be part of it," Virginia Tech student K Alnajar says. "I want to be a part of that culture."

"I'm a little jealous of the students here because they are so much further along than I was when I was there age," Ohanian says. "So a little bit of jealousy, but it's exciting too. It means they are going to accomplish more than I could because they have so many resources at their disposal."

Resources Ohanian hopes will make a difference, inspiring students to create what may be the next Reddit.
