ROANOKE, VA -

VDOT will pay a northern Virginia company $38.4 million to design and build Roanoke's "Big Easy" completion.

On Monday afternoon, the agency announced The Lane Construction Corporation of Chantilly won the contract to finish the Valley View interchange off of Interstate 581.

VDOT says construction on the project could start later this Fall, and pushed the work completion date from an estimated 2015, to mid-2016.

The contract includes:

Building an off-ramp from southbound I-581 onto Valley View Blvd.

Building an on-ramp from Valley View Blvd. onto northbound I-581

Improving existing off-ramp from I-581 northbound to Valley View Blvd.

Improving existing off-ramp from Valley View Blvd. to southbound I-581

Build a "continuous lane" on southbound I-581 to connect the new off-ramp from Valley View Blvd., to the current on-ramp at Hershberger Rd. exit

Build a "continuous lane" on northbound I-581 to connect the off-ramp from Hershberger Rd. to the new off-ramp to Valley View Blvd.

Widening the bridge over I-581 to four lanes, and add turn lanes onto new on-ramps

Move part of the Lick Run Greenway north of its current location

Add soundwalls to help prevent noise in neighborhoods near I-581

The additional lanes and traffic signals to the bridge over I-581 would become part of what's known as a "diverging diamond interchange."  Here's how VDOT proposes it would work:

Four stop lights total would be added to the end of off-ramps on the northbound and southbound sides

Two traffic lights would be added at either ends of the bridge to divert the flow of traffic, into the lane opposite of normal driving (see picture of diagram to the left)
