NY non-profit offering dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD

Posted: Updated:
FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

Some abandoned dogs at Fort Bragg will soon act as therapy dogs for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

A New York-based non-profit called Guardians of Rescue picked up nine dogs Monday from the Fort Bragg Animal Shelter. The dogs had either been abandoned or found as strays.

The dogs will receive veterinary care and training before being placed with Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffering from PTSD.

"For a soldier to have the ability to wake up and have his face licked by a dog is what's going to save him from every single day of those moments," Robert Misseri, with Guardians of Rescue, explained of the program.

Guardians of Angels estimate as many as 400,000 veterans suffer from PTSD.

The group has been known for rescuing dogs in natural disasters in the past, but this is the first time the group has made its way to a military base.
