Rural Retreat hit hard by another round of snow

Posted: Updated:

They tried shovels, and snow blowers, but people in rural retreat made minimal progress at clearing a path as high winds and driving snow blanketed several inches already on the ground.

"We have an Easter flurry they say," said Ann Jones.

It was a springtime snowfall that felt more like mid-January than late March. The roads in town saw plenty of attention over the past few days, from crews pre-treating and plowing, which kept most main roads in good traveling condition

"It's not too bad if you know what you're doing. I've been here almost all my life so growing up in snow like this, you get used to driving in it," said Dale Vipperman.

As for the interstate, I-81 took another punch of winter precipitation, but efforts from crews also kept it clear throughout the day.

"The roads are still in pretty good shape. The state and the town have done a pretty good job. The roads are pretty warm, of course it's sticking on the back roads, all the dirt roads and all the secondary roads they're really covered," said Tom Litz.

And clearing side streets is a task crews will get to once all of the unseasonable snow stops and spring-like temperatures help melt away what's left behind.
