Valley View Interchange brings opportunities to Roanoke City

For more than a decade, signs keep anyone from driving on this exit ramp. Besides you wouldn't get very far; the road ends right there. But all that is about to change says assistant city manager Brian Townsend. He says a completed interchange at valley View Boulevard and 581 is a good thing.

"I think now the role for the city to make sure we leverage that investment in the new interchange," says Townsend.

Starting this fall, $38.4 million will complete the interchange by 2016. On one side, the project opens up 100 acres of undeveloped land for the city known as Evans spring. A project in the city's 10 year plan.

"We only get one chance to develop an area, and you want to make sure you devote the time and energy to develop it the best way possible for everyone impacted and benefited by the development," says Townsend.

Townsend says the project will help traffic congestion, and make it easier to get to stores near Valley View Mall. Great news for T&P Jewelers owner Pam Ramey.

I think traffic flow always help business," says Ramey.

As it is now, if you are driving on 581 south, the only way to get to valley view mall is using the Hershburger road exit.

"Where we are located, we would get more traffic going by our particular area by folks who would normally turn into Valley View Mall and not come down this way," says Ramey.

And could also mean less congestion for those dealing with mall traffic. One of the many things folks can look forward to in a couple of years once the ramp to nowhere leads everywhere.
