Botetourt schools creating STEM-H Academy

BOTETOURT COUNTY -

Botetourt County Public Schools hope a new academy will better prepare students for jobs in Southwest Virginia.

This fall the school system will launch a STEM-H Academy.

STEM-H stands for science, technology, engineering, math, and healthcare.

The four year academy will offer students career paths in pre-engineering, information systems, and pre-healthcare.

Botetourt County Secondary Education Supervisor Dr. Joni Poff said this is a new way to make sure students stay competitive preparing for college and the workforce.

"I think students know and hopefully we're educating them that these are the areas where the jobs are," Poff said. "If you want to compete for one of these you have to prepare yourself and it starts early on."

Botetourt County's STEM-H Academy will launch this fall.

An informational meeting on the academy will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Greenfield Education Center.
