Roanoke County police add crime analyst

The Roanoke County police department has added a crime analyst.

It's the first such position the department has had in several years.

The crime analyst will help police allocate resources by keeping track of where and when crimes occur.

Department heads will then use that information to place officers where they are needed most.

Roanoke County's system will also rely heavily on traffic enforcement.

"For the criminal," explained Roanoke County police chief Howard Hall, "if there's an area where there's lots of police activity, that's not a very comfortable area to commit a crime."

Hall is an expert in DDACTS, or Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety.
