UNC drops honor charge against sexual assault victim

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The University of North Carolina is suspending an honor court proceeding against a student who claims the university has been mishandling sex assault cases.

On Monday, UNC student Landen Gambill filed a federal complaint against the school, saying it retaliated against her.

Gambill's attorney, Clay Turner, sent a letter Monday to Chancellor Holden Thorp, advising the school of the complaint that his client filed with the Office for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education. The letter also asked Thorp to dismiss charges filed in the school's honor code court against Gambill.

"For several weeks, the University has grappled with how best to respond to a public claim of retaliation against the University while maintaining the autonomy and integrity of our Honor Court proceedings and the privacy of the individuals involved," Chancellor Holden Thorp wrote in an open letter to students, faculty and staff.

Gambill's complaint marks the third one filed this year against the university concerning sexual assault. Gambill is also one of five women who in January filed a Title IX complaint with the office of civil rights, saying UNC-CH mishandles sexual abuse cases.

The announcement comes as a CNN report includes strong comments from women who say they were sexual assaulted as UNC students and who criticized the culture at Carolina. One, Annie Clark, described "a pervasive  culture of sexual assault where the university has acted with deliberate indifference."

Clark told CNN she was raped off campus in 2007.

Thorp also invoked the Carolina community's long tradition of encouraging students to exercise their right to speak out. In the letter, Thorp also states that the university has made "significant changes to its policies in recent years."

Thorp has called sexual assault one of the greatest challenges facing college campuses nationwide, including Carolina.
